Integrating BIM into the B.Architecture Curriculum at Pokhara University

Posted by Nepal BIM Forum on Mon Jun 17 2024

We're thrilled to announce a groundbreaking publication by Assistant Professors Pradip Pokharel and Gaurab Luitel from Madan Bhandari College of Engineering, detailing the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) into the B.Architecture curriculum at Pokhara University. Presented at the International Conference on Applied Science and Engineering in Changing World in June 2024, this study underscores the pivotal role of BIM in architectural education.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) stands as a crucial tool in architectural education, enhancing design precision, project collaboration, and sustainability practices. Despite its numerous benefits, the adoption of BIM in Nepal faces challenges such as high software costs, the need for specialized training, and curriculum integration complexities. This research focuses on analyzing the Bachelor of Architecture curriculum to facilitate seamless integration of BIM tools. The study proposes a comprehensive approach involving content analysis to identify gaps in the curriculum and SOAR analysis for introducing standalone BIM courses. It suggests incorporating BIM across various courses from design studios to construction technologies and thesis-related subjects. Starting with foundational skills in CAD and presentation tools, the curriculum progresses to advanced BIM applications like 3D representation, rendering tools, and interdisciplinary workshops. Looking ahead, the study advocates for cooperative learning methods, narrative videos, and partnerships between universities and industry players to overcome barriers to BIM adoption. By enhancing educational resources and practical training, Pokhara University aims to equip future architects with the skills needed to excel in a digitally-driven construction industry.

The integration of BIM into the B.Architecture curriculum at Pokhara University represents a significant leap towards modernizing architectural education in Nepal. This initiative not only prepares students for the complexities of real-world design and construction but also fosters innovation and sustainability in architectural practices.
